Abusive Broadcasting Techniques & Methods (Examples)

A dramatic scene from the film 'The Network'

The following examples, of unrelenting abuse by the Australian media, were submitted to the Expendable research team, between 2009 and 2011. They demonstrate a small selection of the techniques and methods, which have been hugely effective, in influencing public opinion.

1. OPEN FABRICATION
In Australia, dead men cannot sue, a situation which unscrupulous broadcasters have taken full advantage of. Following the death of Schapelle Corby's father, in January 2008, the broadcast of smear and proven fabrication, presented as fact, was an increasingly common feature.

The Primary Smear Report demonstrates one such case, involving the ABC's Lateline. The entirely false allegations made on Lateline, in July 2008, were widely syndicated, at a crucial time for Schapelle Corby, and were hugely damaging to her welfare and prospects.

The ABC's twenty second apology, and a note tucked away on their website, were wholly inadequate in reversing the significant negative impact upon public perception.

2. DEFAMATION
Due to the serious shortcomings of Australian law, Schapelle Corby's family were not able to defend themselves against lies and fabrications presented through her father.

However, when similar allegations were made against Mercedes Corby, as a living person, she was able to confront the broadcaster responsible, Channel 7. The Surpreme Court confirmed the allegations as outright fabrications, and thus, that she had been directly defamed by them.

Unfortunately, Schapelle Corby's father remained an open target.

3. THE USE OF ENTERTAINMENT
The use of 'entertainment', to manage public opinion, embraced most commercial channels. Schapelle Corby's struggle to survive mental illness, in her squalid cell, in itself became a source of humour and ridicule. Australian networks openly conditioned the public to accept her continued abuse:

Here, the target was Schapelle Corby's sister, Mercedes, who, ironically, is being ridiculed for defending her name against media defamation:

4. DIRTY TRICKS
Despite struggling daily to sustain her sister, whilst desperately seeking to prove her innocence, Mercedes Corby herself had to suffer repeated abuses. In this example, an Australian TV network provided bait, in the form of potential new evidence, as they sought to engineer what they considered to be entertainment:

5. SUBLIMINAL MESSAGING
The sound bite technique is a hugely controversial tool of propaganda, and has frequently been employed by the media to promote key messages regarding Schapelle Corby. In this example, Nine Network broadcast an advert for a publication by ACP Magazines, which like Nine itself, is owned by CVC Asia Pacific. Woman's Day has a long history of producing stories which are extremely hostile to Schapelle Corby.

With Schapelle Corby desperately seeking to return to a hospital in Australia, and her clemency appeal at a critical stage, the following advert was broadcast (November 2010), suggesting to Australians that she didn't want to come home:

6. ABUSIVE PRODUCTION ENGINEERING
In broadcasting, smears have been backed up by the crudest of production techniques. Here, dark sinister music score is used to introduce Schapelle Corby's father, who was dying of cancer at the time:

7. HOSTILE OPINION PRESENTATION
Schapelle Corby's deteriorating mental and physical health posed the constant threat that public sympathy might develop. This was countered, not only through the use of subliminal and entertainment messaging, but through the routine presentation of uninformed, hostile and inhumane opinion.

8. NEWS MANAGEMENT: CENSORSHIP
Supportive information and developments have usually been completely censored out of the news:

These examples represent a tiny fraction of the overall output, and a small sample of the range of hostile approaches used, over the course of more than seven years.

THE ACMA
On behalf of the government, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) regulates broadcasting services. This government agency has failed to uphold a single complaint with respect to Schapelle Corby, supporting the broadcasters on every occasion.

It has effectively endorsed the ongoing situation, and the staggering number of broadcasting abuses, which themselves align with the government's position documented throughout this website.

Third Party Hostility

Since the publication of the first Expendable report, in September 2011, a significant number of hostile acts have been perpetrated against the internet properties used by The Expendable Project, and increasingly, against individuals associated, by third parties, with the project.

These acts have been initiated by Australian government agencies, Australian corporations, and a number of related and unrelated persons.

They include the unlawful monitoring and intrusion of project web site properties, the freezing of donation accounts, the covert video surveillance of individuals, unlawful efforts to construct false evidential trails (which would support the potential seizure of computer equipment), direct legal threats, legal actions, abusive and threatening correspondence, false public allegations, and verbal and written threats of a sinister nature.

The individuals targeted bear no responsibility for any Expendable project publication or broadcast, but rather, have been subjected to this attention by virtue of location in Australia, relatively high profile support for the project's objectives, and in some cases, simply through submission of material to The Expendable Project for consideration.

In one case, a targeted individual has required emergency hospitalisation, through the acute aggravation of a heart condition.

These hostile acts, against innocent individuals, are being meticulously documented. They are considered to be vexatious, malicious, unlawful and pre-meditated, designed to intimidate, and deflect, The Expendable Project from its mission.

Appropriate and measured responses, with respect to the perpetrators, are currently under consideration.

Note that The Expendable Project has been structured specifically to withstand such malevolent and ill conceived tactics, with defence of the project network and infrastructure being a key priority. Identification of the project decision structure is not possible, and all central decisions are taken outside the jurisdiction of the state of Australia.

We can assure all supporters that the project and network is durable enough to withstand any effort to disrupt its operations, and thus, to suppress the truth it was created to reveal.

Statement Of Operation: The Expendable Project

The following statements describe the operation of The Expendable Project:

THE PROJECT MISSION
The mission of The Expendable Project is to expose the truth with respect to the Schapelle Corby case, through meticulous and independent research and investigation.

INDEPENDENCE
The Expendable Project has no connection with Schapelle Corby or her family. At the outset, the decision was taken to retain independence, to mitigate the risk that the project could be used against them by unscrupulous third parties.

JURISDICTION
Editorial and publication related decisions are taken exclusively under the protection of the constitution of the United States of America.

All inclusions are covered under fair use, under Title 17 U.S.C. Section 107, and other constitutional protections.

THE DELIVERABLES
The Expendable Project does not constitute reports, video clips, dossiers, recordings, the documentary film, or any other material. These materials comprise "the deliverables" of The Expendable Project. Hidden World Films, and The Hidden World Research Group, are generic names of convenience for subset activities of The Expendable Project.

NON-PUBLICATION
The materials, recordings, footage, domain names, images, and information used by The Expendable Project were provided by contributors, both individual and corporate, and by individual members of the global humanitarian truth network. Such contributions in no way constitute or imply ownership, control, publication, or broadcast, by those individuals or corporations.

DISTRIBUTION
All reports, dossiers, video clips, and other materials, including the documentary film, are provided via social network properties, and freely distributed by members of the global public. Upload, copying, and further distribution by such individuals, and other individuals, in no way constitutes or implies ownership, control, publication, or association with The Expendable Project.

THE GATEKEEPERS
Communication with the project team is possible only through nominated 'gatekeepers'. Gatekeepers are trusted individuals, located across three continents, who, in some cases, are also contributors. Their role is to protect the anonymity of the studio and team, and thus protect the operational capacity of the project from disruption. Gatekeepers act as primary contact points for the media and other parties. The gatekeeper role in no way constitutes or implies ownership, control, publication, or other association with The Expendable Project.

THIRD PARTY INDEMNIFICATION
Positive and/or supportive blogging, social network posting, or media commentary, by individuals, do not constitute or imply any other association with The Expendable Project.

Third party references to the collective, "we", in the context of The Expendable Project, constitute the social and network nature of the undertaking and mission, and in no way constitute or imply ownership, control, or responsibility for publication, broadcast, or any association with The Expendable Project. They merely reflect the nature of the language of affinity with the objectives of the project.

Financial contributions and/or donations, either direct or via service or other provision, made by members of the public, or by members of the global humanitarian network, in no way constitute or imply ownership, control, or responsibility for publication, broadcast, or any association with The Expendable Project.

THIRD PARTY HOSTILITY
Any hostile act emanating from Australian based entities, against individuals or corporations, as referenced in previous sections, will be considered to be vexatious, extortionate, malicious and intimidatory in nature.

EXHIBIT: Unanswered Questions

On 23rd May 2005, Opposition Leader, Kim Beazley, put a number of direct questions relating to aviation security to the Howard government:

Answers to these questions were never forthcoming.

The Quango Report

The sustained failures and abuses of the major departments of state, with respect to Schapelle Corby, are documented throughout a significant number of the Expendable Reports.

However, as illustrated within this report, even with smaller public facing agencies, every avenue of complaint was blocked, and every request for assistance was rejected. This has been reflected through a multitude of approaches, from different individuals, over a prolonged period of years.

As demonstrated consistently throughout The Expendable Project, all government departments and agencies have been subject to the same position and policy. Schapelle Corby’s legal, civil and human rights, as an Australian citizen, have, in practice, been revoked.

Yet there is no recourse available to her, or to those representing her, to address this situation.

Note that this report is a short abridged version of the complete report, which will be published as an appendix to Expendable Dossier 2.

Media Insider Interviews

The conduct and agenda of much of the Australian media, with respect to Schapelle Corby, is documented in a number of Expendable reports. In particular: The Primary Smear Report, The Prison Abuse Report, and The Opinion Management Report.

Regrettably, smears, fabrication, outright lies, and censorship, are self-evident all too often.

In this Insider Interview, Col Chapman describes and discusses a number of extremely disturbing methods and approaches. He covers home bugging, phone hacking, GPS vehicle tracking, and even hidden surveillance cameras placed inside Kerobokan prison.

He affirms that, even the most contemptuous of approaches, failed to link Schapelle Corby, or her family, with drug syndication. This, of course, reflects exactly the same findings by the police.

Mr. Chapman is a hugely experienced private investigator, and has worked with most of Australia’s mainstream media organs. He was employed intensively, and long term, on the Schapelle Corby case, and is able to provide what is probably the most authoritative insight into media activity and behaviour, with respect to this case.

SUBSEQUENT CHRONOLOGY & DURESS
Mr Chapman gave this interview in November 2011. He also approached the government's (Finkelstein) media inquriy, which was underway at the time, as confirmed by the following letter:

Unfortunately, this was to no avail. Little interest was shown, and he was offered no protection or substantive assistance. Mr Chapman also approached a number of other related parties, with similar results.

Equally alarming, supporters of Schapelle Corby, and those perceived to be associated with The Expendable Project in Australia, were simultaneously subjected to legal and other threats, stemming from a variety of sources. This was despite them having no editorial capacity whatsoever, and no link to the publication unit in the United States. The Expendable Project considers a number of these to have been vexatious, and crude attempts to intimidate the project itself, via threats to clearly innocent citizens.

Mr Chapman, himself aware of this sequence of events, subsequently sought to retract his statements.

However, The Expendable Project obtained additional correspondence, demonstrating that he had also been approached by a third party. Indeed, The Expendable Project holds a number of other materials regarding approaches to Mr Chapman.

Given all these circumstances, The Expendable Project does not consider Mr Chapman's response to be without at least an element of duress.

LEGAL NOTICE: In the following recordings, the names of a number of parties, including individuals acting in a representative capacity, have been omitted. These will be submitted to appropriate third party entities in due course (including international institutions), and are thus being managed as sub-judice for the present time.

The Mental Illness Report

Schapelle Corby is now mentally ill, and due to the strong medication she is taking for this, she is also physically deteriorating. She was diagnosed in August 2009, by one of Australia's most eminent psychiatrists, Dr Jonathan Phillips, MB BS FRANZCP. Her very presence in a squalid prison constitutes a gross abuse of her human rights.

This report examines her deteriorating condition, in the face of the ongoing indifference of her own government.
